Gunfighter Library #1 and Gunshot Western Library #26

Gunfighter Library #1 has a proxy cover date of November 1970, and was recycled by Page Publications a couple of years later as Gunshot Western Library #26:

Naturally both covers are by Keith Chatto. And naturally I expect there is yet another reprint of this issue by Yaffa to be unearthed. You get the drill by now...

While both covers are indeed by Chatto, I thought at first glance that the earlier one might have been the work of Maurice Bramley. There's something about the drawing of the hand - the detailed cross-hatching - that made me think of Bramley's style. So much for initial impressions!

Yeah, I did double-take on this cover too, for both the linework and the staging - I checked the issue to see if it was based on interior art, but not that I could see. The hand is Bramleyesque, but on closer inspection, it is clearly in the scratchier Chatto mode rather than the smoother Bramley style. Chatto really was a Yaffa workhorse in this early/mid -'70's period, and my guess is that the instances of cover art which display more of his labour-intensive shading reflect a kinder deadline. Still learning about this Chatto period - fun stuff!

The cover to Gunsmoke Library #4 is very similar to Gunfighter Library #1:https://notesfromthejunkyard.blogspot.com.au/search?q=gunsmoke+library
