Ms. Marvel: The complete Yaffa cover gallery

Here's a cover gallery of my complete collection of Page Publications' Ms. Marvel:

Ms. Marvel #1, c.April 1978

Ms. Marvel #2, c.October 1979

Ms. Marvel #3, c.June 1981

Ms. Marvel #4, 16 October 1981

Ms. Marvel #NN, c.August 1983

The first two issues are regular/magazine-sized, the rest are digest-sized - #3 is a 'short' digest edition, the other two are 'tall' editions.

The dates are based on information to hand and will be updated as more data comes through.

As you can see from the covers, the first issue was recycled twice.

I am unaware of any retitled recycled editions, and given the unnumbered issue is from 1983, it is unlikely any were issued after this point.

Operation War Cry

Here's a cover scan of my rather tattered copy of Gredown's Operation War Cry:

I have not identified the cover source, and note that Medals of Death is not a story title which appears in this magazine.

The contents:

Medals and a Clear Conscience is a 16-page story which begins on page 2, the inner front cover. It is possibly retitled from Medals of Death.

Original source unknown.

The Decisive Moment is a 16-page story with the following credits:
Script: M.V. Rodoreda
Artwork: Tello
Lettering: R.A. Victoria

Original source unknown.

Rescue is a 14-page story with the following credits:
Script: A. Sandoval
Artwork: G. Deltoro

Original source unknown

The Case of the Phantom Plane is a 3-page story originally published in ACG's Out of the Night #6, cover-dated December 1952-January 1953.

Betrayal on Command is a 16-page story signed by Estaban Polls. The story ends on the rear cover.

Original source unknown.

Update 7 May 2023: James has identified some of the sources and credits including this page from an issue of Guerra (Vilmar):

Dating Federal Comics' Batman team up series

Federal Comics' Batman and... is a messy series to index due to confusion and errors on the part of the Federal editors but I think I've sorted it out. Let's begin by laying out the issues concerned in chronological published order:

Batman and Metamorpho The Element Man #1, December 1982 (Murray Comics/Black logo)

Batman and The Catwoman #2, March 1983 (Murray Comics/Red logo)

Batman and the Creeper #3, April 1983 (Federal Comics/Murray the Cat logo)

Batman and Adam Strange #4, July 1983 (Federal Comics/Red and Blue logo)

Batman and Hawkman #5, December 1983 (Federal Comics/Red and Blue logo)

Batman and the Flash #6, February 1984 (Federal Comics/Black logo)

Batman and The Outsiders #7, April 1984 (Australian DC Edition)

Batman and The Outsiders #8, June 1984 (Australian DC Edition/Federal Comics)

Batman and Batman Album #NN, June 1984 (Australian DC Edition/Federal Comics)

Batman and Sgt. Rock #NN, July 1984 (Australian DC Edition/Federal Comics)

Batman and The Outsiders #9, September 1984 (Australian DC Edition/Federal Comics)

Batman and Nemesis #NN, September 1984 (Australian DC Edition/Federal Comics)

Batman and The Outsiders #10, October 1984 (Australian DC Edition/Federal Comics)

Notes:

1. Batman and... is a team up series based on material originally appearing in the DC series The Brave and the Bold. The Murray and Federal issues used the Batman team up story as the headline cover feature, and the rest of the issues would feature stories with the supporting character (although some issues included other Batman stories too).

2. This series is confusing because the numbering of the series transitions from one title to another - from Batman and... #6 to Batman and The Outsiders #7.

3. Confusing things further is the three unnumbered Batman and ... issues. Unmoored from their series numbering, collectors have understandably deemed them to have been published before Batman and the Outsiders #7.

4. The problem begins with the publication of Batman and The Outsiders #7. This edition maintains the Collector's Item! First Issue! banners, and really should have been the first issue in a new Federal Comics series. If this had been done the above lineup would have seen the three unnumbered issues numbered as Batman and Batman Album #7, Batman and Sgt. Rock #8 and Batman and Nemesis #9.

5. Federal's edition of The Brave and The Bold #200, the final issue in the series, also appears to have messed things up unnecesarily. Awkwardly cover-titled titled Album starring Batman and Batman (there is no indicia title, but it likely would have been Batman and Batman), it seems to have been issued without clarity as to its status. They may have intended this as a follow-up to Murray's Batman Album #51, or a companion issue to DC Comics Presents Superman and the Golden Age Superman, published a month earlier in May 1984. Regardless of their intentions, it's clearly the first of the three unnumbered Batman and... issues , and to my mind belongs to this series, even if it's as an auxiliary 'Annual'.

6. Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk Album can also be considered part of this mix, similarly to Album starring Batman and Batman. This issue was published January 1984, between Batman and... #5 and #6. It's understandable why this was issued as an unnumbered issue, given the main source material, and it operates like a related Annual to the mother series. However, it does end with a reprint from The Brave and the Bold #196, from the same period as the other Batman and... issues.

7. Batman and The Outsiders #11 onwards appears to be published mostly regularly at two month intervals.

The various Federal Comics logos referenced above accord datewise with my schema sampled via the Superman series in this period.

Captain Marvel: The complete Yaffa cover gallery

Here's a cover gallery of my complete run of Page Publications' Captain Marvel:

#1, c.November 1977

#2, c.June 1978

#3, c.March 1979

#4, c.July 1980

#5, c.March 1981

#6, c.May 1981

#7, c.October 1981

#8, c.February 1982

Notes:
1. The first three issues are standard/magazine-sized, the rest are digest-sized - #'s 4-6 are the 'short' scale, #'s 7-8 are the 'tall' editions.

2.I believe the dates are accurate to within a month, give or take.

3. #5 has an indicia date of 1980, but I have spotted 4 copies with a newsagency marking of 6 or June, suggesting a March release, which would date it earlier than #4 in July 1980. So, I've deemed it a March 1981, pending further information.

4. A series like this would typically end with a numbered magazine-sized reprint of the first issue, and subsequent retitled recycled issues. I have not seen any such issues for this series.

Frantic With Fear

Gredown's Frantic With Fear was published c.March 1980:

The contents:

Messenger of the Stars

Very Well Mr. Milton...

Goodbye, My Love, Goodbye, originally published in Vampirella #41, April 1975

The Make-Up

Last of his Kind!, originally published in Forbidden Worlds #115, October 1963

The Big Kill!, originally published in Out of the Night #14, April-May 1954

9th Life, originally published in Creepy Things #5, April 1976

Magic Mutt!, originally published in Unknown Worlds #10, September 1961

The Thing From The Graveyard

Once Gods Walked The Earth!, originally published in Forbidden Worlds #120, July 1964

The Burning Corpse

Only Tough Guys Get Places!, originally published in Forbidden Worlds #128, July 1965

Blood-Bath, originally published in Weird v7#7, December 1973

Notes:

1. The cover story title The Idol's Revenge does not appear in this issue. The title may be loosely based on the opening story Messenger of the Stars.

2. Many of these stories were previously published in Gredown comics: Goodbye, My Love, Goodbye in Vampirella #28; the Make-Up in Weird Tales of the Macabre #2; The Big Kill! in Vault of Demons #4; 9th Life in Vault of Demons #1; The Burning Corpse in Vault of Demons #5; and Blood-Bath in Tales of Horror #8.

3. Messenger of the Stars is illustrated - and possibly scripted - by Alfonso Aspiri, who may be best known by Australian horror comics collectors for his work appearing in Gredown's Frankestein's Nights #1 and The Horror From The Lake #1.

4. This issue is printed by Eastern Suburbs Newspapers, 77 Belmore Road, Randwick. Most of the Gredown issues I have indexed so far were published by ESN at the Joynton Road address, and appear to be from 1981 onwards. The only other Gredown issue I have identified so far to have been printed at the 77 Belmore Road address has a confirmed publication date of 1980. Besides my copy I have spotted three other copies of this issue with 6 written on the cover. It is on these sketchy details that I have ascribed a publication date of March 1980.

Update 21 March 2023: James has found another source for the cover:

I'm not sure if this is pre- or post-Frantic with Fear.

Notes:

I attempted a complete list of Gredown horror comics some 15 years ago. Since then I have almost completed my collection - there's less than a dozen outstanding. This list is based on my collection and other verified issues.

My previous lists focused on horror issues with some acknowledgment of other genres such as western and sci-fi. This list does not differentiate between genres.

The previous list contained a number of errors and omissions which have been rectified. I'm tempted to delete the previous posts attending to this matter, however I am leaving them on the blog in part for posterity, and in part because they contain a number of comments contributed by other collectors.

There are probably some errors or omissions to this list. I will deem this a live document, to be updated as more information comes to hand, and acknowledge such updates and contributions below.

Most of the issues above are unnumbered. Numbered issues are duly designated. Some unnumbered issues are recycled editions of previously numbered issues. Such issues are designated with #NN to differentiate them from their numbered counterparts.

Gredown also published horror and detective/crime magazines which would have shared newsstand space with the comics magazines. These are of interest to collectors, but this list is purely concerned with the comics. It is possible that some such prose magazines have been misidentified and are actually comics. TBA.

There are some anomalies worth pointing out. The Zombies featuring Delta 99 is unnumbered, but is likely [#1} to The Zombies #2. Similarly, Voodoo Tales #1 is probably the first issue to Voodoo #'s 2-3. And the first three issues of the relatively long-running series Strange Experience are pulp-style magazines, not comics.

I am still working on the dates for these issues. They were first published in 1976, and appear to have ended around 1983, however I have one issue with a 1985 date stamp on it.

Update 8 March 2023: This list has been updated to include Ravages of Evil and Scream in Terror, and to delete Kiss of Death 1 and 2 - only an unnumbered issue exists. These details were known to me however it took the eagle-eyed Jim McIntosh to correct my errors. Much obliged, Jim.

Update 13 March 2023: Ghoul Tales 1 and 2 deleted from list. This is a Yaffa series.

Update 18 March 2023: Stark Fear 4 deleted. Thanks again Jim.
