The Incredible Hulk: The complete Yaffa cover gallery

Here's a cover gallery of my complete run of Page Publications' The Incredible Hulk:

 #1, October 1977

 #2, February 1978

 #4, June 1979

 #5, July 1980

 #6, March 1981

 #7, c.August 1981

 #8, late 1981

 #9, January 1982

#10, January 1982

The first five issues are regular/magazine size, #'s 8 and 9 are 'tall' digests, and the rest are regular 'short' digest-sized.

The dates are based on the indicia and available newsagency markings, and will be updated as more data comes to hand.

I note the last two issues have been each been dated January 1982. This is irregular but is based on the data available. I also note that a couple of years ago I earmarked #10 as anomalous in the scheme of things. Curiously, apart from this issue above, I have not come across any other recycled Yaffa reprints of their Hulk issues, retitled or otherwise. Something tells me I'll be revisiting this particular issue.

The Incredible Hulk #15: The Newton edition

Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #15 is cover-dated March 1976:

The cover originally appeared on Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #112:

The story contents are as follows:

The Brute Battles On!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #112, February 1969
Nowhere To Go But Down!, originally published in Man-Thing #2, February 1974

The reprinting of The Brute Battles On! has been compromised, to say the least. See the two pages below:

These are pages 7 and 26 respectively of this issue. However, they are not native to this story. They belong to the story Where Fall The Shifting Sands?, which originally appeared in The Incredible Hulk #113, and was published by Newton Comics in Newton Four-In-One #1

The missing pages are scanned below, as they appear in Page Publications' The Incredible Hulk #6:

Note the Yaffa printings also appear to be subject to some degree of editorial modification.

Nowhere To Go But Down! is a 19-page story. The first seven pages are reprinted in this edition, with a To Be Continued advisory appended at the bottom of the last page. It appears to be otherwise intact.

This issue contains a poster of The Avengers and Spider-Man:

This is modified from the image on the cover of Newton Comics' The Avengers #10.

This issue includes an in-house ad for The Mighty Thor #2:

This issue includes two letters pages, a Captain America transfer and a contest with the expiry date 31 January 1976 - earlier than the expiry date for the contest in the previous issue, and the same date as the contest in The Incredible Hulk #13.

The Incredible Hulk #15 was advertised in-house:

This ad is scanned from The Invincible Iron Man #2.

This is the final issue in the series. The next issue made it at least as far as the cover mock-up stage and was advertised in this period:

As discussed above, the proxy for this issue is Newton Four-In-One #1.

The Incredible Hulk #14: The Newton edition

Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #14 is cover-dated January 1976:

The cover originally appeared on Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #111:

The story contents are as follows:

Shanghaied in Space!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #111, January 1969
Battle of the Palace of the Gods! [Part 3], originally published in Man-Thing #1, January 1974

Shanghaied in Space! appears to be reprinted intact. As per previous issues, the Yaffa print in The Incredible Hulk #6 omits the To Be Hulkinued advice in the final panel.

The third instalment of Battle of the Palace of the Gods! begins similarly to the second instalment with a series and story title imposed above the opening tier of panels:

The third tier has been cropped along the bottom, and the lettering at the bottom of the final caption box appears to have been drafted by a Newton staffer. Compare this to a scan of the same page from Yaffa's The Man-Thing #1:

This issue contains a Planet of the Apes poster:

This image was used on the cover of Newton Comics' Planet of the Apes #13.

This issue includes the following in-house advertisements for other Newton comics:

Monsters Unleashed! #1

The Incredible Hulk #14 was advertised in-house with a pre-production cover image:

This ad is scanned from The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #2.

The contest expiry date is 28 February 1976. This is four weeks after the contest expiry date in the previous issue. We know there were reasons for delays in the post-Christmas 1975 period, and we have come to expect the contest dates to be less reliable indicators of publication dates in 1976. Having said that, it appears to me that this issue was most likely published 17 January 1976. TBC.

This issue also includes a subscription page, a t-shirt offer and two letters pages.

The Incredible Hulk #13: The Newton edition

Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #13 is cover-dated December 1975:

The cover image originally appeared on the cover of Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #110

The story contents are as follows:

Umbu, the Unliving!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #110, December 1968
Battle of the Palace of the Gods! [Part 2], originally published in Man-Thing #1, January 1974

Umbu, the Unliving! appears to be reprinted intact, apart from a bit of cropping at the bottom of the splash page to accommodate the indicia.

The 5-page instalment of Battle of the Palace of the Gods! has been modified:

Compare this to the printing of this page in Yaffa's The Man-Thing #2:

As you can see the Newton page has the series and story title inserted above the top tier with the Continued From Last Issue advisory. The top tier of panels is intact, however the second tier has been cropped at the bottom. Not only that, but the speech balloon in the second panel of the bottom tier has been rearranged and placed on its side in order to fit it into the panel. It's rather comical, but perversely effective in the context of Howard falling.

This issue contains a Spider-Man poster:

This image originally appeared on the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #133. The Newton Comics branding makes this appear to be a mock up of a Newton cover.

There are a number of in-house advertisement for other Newton comics in this issue:

Dracula #10

The Fantastic Four #12

The rest of the pages comprise a t-shirt offer, the Bulletin page featuring Captain America, and a contest with the expiry date 31 January 1976. This is two weeks after the expiry date of the contest in the previous issue, which suggests a publication date of 20 December 1975.

The Incredible Hulk #12: The Newton edition

Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #12 was published 6 December 1975:

The cover originally appeared on Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #109:

The Newton cover was also used as a poster in The Mighty Thor #2:

The story contents are as follows:

The Monster and the Man-Beast!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #109, November 1968
Battle for the Palace of the Gods! [Part 1], originally published in Man-Thing #1, January 1974

The Monster and the Man-Beast! does not appear to have been subjected to any undue editorial modification. Interestingly the Yaffa printing of this story in The Incredible Hulk #5 has a modified splash page - the caption which references the Last Ish has been omitted as the previous story is included in the issue and is thus redundant.

Battle for the Palace of the Gods is a 19-page story. The first 8 pages are reprinted in this instalment. They appear to be intact without any editorial modification.

This is the poster in this issue:

This image was previously published by Newton Comics on the cover of Conan the Barbarian #7. Note the reference to The Fantastic Four Annual - presumably this was inserted at the last minute as there are no other in-house advertisements for Newton comics in this issue. It was announced in the letter column in the previous issue - the same letter column is printed in this issue

This issue includes the Tarzan Book Offer:

The contest in this issue expired 19 January 1976, two weeks after the expiry date of the contest in the previous issue. This suggests a publication date of 6 December 1975. This date is confirmed by two advertisements in the Sunday Observer dated 7 December 1975:

This issue also includes a t-shirt offer.

The Incredible Hulk #11: The Newton edition

Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #11 is cover-dated November 1975:

It originally appeared on the cover of Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #108:

The story contents are as follows:

Monster Triumphant!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #108, October 1968
When Wakes The Sleeper! [Part 3], originally published in Captain America #101, May 1968

Monster Triumphant! appears to be reprinted without any undue editorial modifications, barring miniscule trimming of the bottom of the splash page. Curiously, it's the Yaffa version in The Incredible Hulk #5 which has been messed up with the omission of the splash page and the next issue directive on the final page.

When Wakes The Sleeper! is completed in this issue. Once again the opening panel has been modified for the purposes of introducing the instalment. Here's a scan of the original panel as it appears in my copy of Essential Captain America Vol. 1, Second Printing, August 2001:

And the modified Newton version with the title and rearranged caption box:

The poster in this issue is from the cover of Newton Comics' Doctor Strange #1:

The Fantastic Four Giant Size 84 Page Annual #1 is advertised in this issue:

The letter column advises this Annual will be out 15 November 1975. Other interesting tidbits include the announcement of the forthcoming Captain America series on 6 December 1975, and advice to readers on how to claim the free Hulk poster offered in the Spidey Team-Up Annual. The column also advises the release of the pocket comics has been postponed until the following year - however they would not see the light of day. There is also a reference to their new distributor.

The expiry date for the contest is 5 January 1976, two weeks after the contest in The Incredible Hulk #10. This suggests a publication date of 22 November 1975, which conforms with data crosschecked against other issues from this period.

Th t-shirt offer and subscription page round out this issue.

The Incredible Hulk #10: The Newton edition

Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #10 is cover-dated November 1975:

This image appeared on the cover of Marvel Super-Heroes #61:

Note this issue is cover-dated November 1976 - long after the Newton edition was published.  According to the GCD entry this cover was taken from an unaltered stat.

This is the original US cover from The Incredible Hulk #107:

The Newton and Marvel Super-Heroes #61 version of the cover was published before both of these issues on the cover of Marvel UK's The Mighty World of Marvel #55. I will address the connection between Newton Comics and Marvel UK in a separate post.

The story contents are as follows:

Ten Rings Hath... The Mandarin!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #107, September 1968
When Wakes The Sleeper! [Part 2], originally published in Captain America #101, May 1968

Ten Rings Hath... The Mandarin! appears to be reprinted intact without undue editorial interference.

A few panels in this story have gray shading. This shading is replicated in the same panels in the Yaffa printing of this story in The Incredible Hulk #4 - apart from one. This may be due to the light printing as even the lettering is fading. I have compared the pages to an online scan of The Incredible Hulk #107 and I believe the gray shading is inherent in the original issue. (Interestingly, it is the Yaffa reprint which differs from the original - the last panel advises Continued Next Issue?, however the Yaffa edition omits the Next Issue? portion.)

When Wakes the Sleeper! continues from The Incredible Hulk #9. There are seven pages in this instalment. It is otherwise unmodified, apart from the opening panel. This is the panel concerned as it appears in my copy of Essential Captain America Vol. 1, Second Printing, August 2001:

This is the panel as it appears in the Newton edition:

As you can see, it has been modified with a series and story title and a Continued From Last Issue advisory, and in the circumstances this is quite justifiable, but one does wonder why the key image in the panel of the capsule wasn't centred in the modified panel.

This issue contains the following poster:

This image originally appeared on the cover of Marvel Comics' The Silver Surfer #4 and was shortly to be on the cover of Newton Comics' The Silver Surfer #4.

This issue includes an in-house ad for Newton Team-Up #1[A]:

This ad also appeared in the previous issue.

As per the previous two issues in this series this issue includes an ad for Origins of Marvel Comics and at-shirt offer on the rear cover.

The contest expiry date is 22 December 1975, two weeks after the expiry date of the contest in The Incredible Hulk #9. This suggests a publication date 8 November 1975.

This issue was advertised in-house:

This is scanned from The Fantastic Four Giant Size 84 Page Annual #1.

The cover to this issue was also used as a poster:
