The Incredible Hulk #9: The Newton edition

Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #9 is cover-dated October 1975:

It is modified version of the cover originally published on Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #106:

The story contents in this issue are as follows:

Above the Earth--A Titan Rages!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #106, August 1968
When Wakes The Sleeper! [Part 1], originally published in Captain America #101, May 1968

Above the Earth--A Titan Rages! appears to be reprinted in full without any undue editorial interference, apart from an insignificant degree of cropping at the bottom of the splash page above the indicia.

When Wakes The Sleeper! is a 20-page story, the first six of which are reprinted in this issue. This portion is reprinted complete and intact, with a To Be Continued advisory added beneath the last panel.

This issue marks the return of the Captain America backup series to this title, so discreetly you wouldn't know it by looking at the cover.

This is a photo of the poster and swap card in my copy:

The image on the poster was previously on the cover of Newton Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man #8. The card presents  the cover of Newton Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man #10.

This issue contains the following in-house advertisements:

Newton Team-Up #1[A]

The Fantastic Four #8

As per the previous issue this issue also contains the ad for Origins of Marvel Comics and a t-shirt offer on the rear cover.

The contest expires 8 December 1975, two weeks after the expiry date of the contest in The Incredible Hulk #8. This suggests a publication date of 25 October 1975.

This issue was advertised in-house:

The Incredible Hulk #8: The Newton edition

This is the cover to Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #8:

It originally appeared on Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #102:

The Newton image has some altered linework - note the prominent extension and retouching of Hulk's right fist - and has also been angled a few degrees, as per below:

The story contents are as follows:

This Monster Unleashed!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #105, July 1968
Enter The Hulk [Part 3], originally published in Tales to Astonish #59, September 1964

This Monster Unleashed! is reprinted complete and intact, apart from very minor cropping at the bottom of the splash page. Note the cover to The Incredible Hulk #105 was previously used on Newton's The Incredible Hulk #2.

The third and final instalment of Enter the Hulk - without the colon in the title - is reprinted with an amended title page:

The inclusion of the title necessitated cropping of the art. In the previous issue the top tier was shortened. In this issue the bottom tier is sacrificed. Compare with a scan of a reprint of the original page:
My copy is missing the poster and the card, however I copied a photo of this issue from an eBay listing which included both:

The Dracula poster is from the cover of Dracula #2 and the card features the cover of The Fantastic Four #3.

This issue contains the following in-house advertisements for other Newton comics:

This issue includes the ad for Origins of Marvel Comics:

The rear cover has a t-shirt offer. Presumably the outer pages of the poster contain letters pages but they may also have other in-house advertisements. TBA.

The contest expires 24 November 1975, two weeks after the contest expiry date in The Incredible Hulk #7. This suggests a publication date of 11 October 1975. This is affirmed by crosschecking publication dates and contest expiry dates in other Newton Comics issues.

This issue was advertised in-house:

This advertisement appeared in The Avengers #8.

Thanks to Mark Cannon and Mark Muller for chipping in with their insights and providing the photo above of the two side-by-side issues.

The Incredible Hulk #7: The Newton edition

This is the cover to Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #7:

It originally appeared on the cover of Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #104:

The story contents are as follows:

Ring Around The Rhino!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #104, June 1968
Enter: The Hulk [Part 2], originally published in Tales to Astonish #59, September 1964

Ring Around The Rhino! appears to have been reprinted intact without undue editorial amendments.

Enter: The Hulk continues from the previous issue. This is the first page as it appears in the Newton edition:

The page has been modified to incorporate the story title. As a consequence the top tier of panels has been cropped. Compare this to a scan of a reprint of the original page:

Five pages of this story are included in this issue. It is otherwise unmodified, apart from the inclusion of a Concluded Next Issue advisory in the final panel.

My copy of this issue contains a Captain America poster and a Hulk swap card:

This Captain America poster was the first Newton Comics poster, having previously been included in The Amazing Spider-Man #1. The swap card featured the cover to The Incredible Hulk #3.

This issue includes the following in-house advertisements for other Newton comics:

Hulk King Size Annual #1

Conan the Barbarian #3

Doctor Strange #4

This issue includes two letters pages, a t-shirt offer, and a contest with the expiry date 10 November 1975.

This issue appears to have been published 27 September 1975.

The Incredible Hulk #6: The Newton edition

This is the cover to Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #6:

It originally appeared on the cover of Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #103:

The story contents are as follows:

And Now... The Space Parasite!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #103, May 1968
Enter: The Hulk [Part 1], originally published in Tales to Astonish #59, September 1964

And Now... The Space Parasite! appears to be reprinted complete and intact.

Enter: The Hulk is an 18-page story. Only the first 7 pages are reprinted in this issue. They appear to be reprinted intact apart from the inclusion of a To Be Continued advisory at the bottom of the last panel.

The poster in this issue featured the cover to Doctor Strange #1:

My copy does not have the Swap Card.

This issue contains two in-house advertisements for other Newton issues:

Dracula #3

Doctor Strange #3

The contest expiry date is 27 October 1975, two weeks after the expiry date in The Incredible Hulk #5, which I believe was published 30 August 1975. This issue includes The Swap Cards Cometh Bulletin. This is also the first $0.35 cover price issue in the series. Triangulating this data leads me to a publication date of 13 September 1975.

This issue also contains a letters page and a t-shirt offer.

The Incredible Hulk #5: The Newton edition

This is the cover to Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #5:

It originally appeared on Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #5:

The story contents are as follows:

[The Terror of the Toad Men Part 3] The Hulk Part 1: Bruce Banner, Wanted for Treason!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #2, July 1962
[The Terror of the Toad Men Part 4] [The Hulk] Part 2 Hulk Runs Amok!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #2, July 1962
[The Terror of the Toad Men Part 5] [ The Hulk] Part 3 The End of The Hulk?, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #2, July 1962
Beauty and the Beast!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #5, January 1963
The Hordes of General Fang!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #5, January 1963

The Terror of the Toad Men is a 5-part story originally published in Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #5. The first two chapters were published in Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #4 and the story continues in this issue. The splash page to Part 3 is renumbered Part 1 and the title is effectively replaced by the title banner The Hulk:

Compare to the original page as published in Page Publications' The Incredible Hulk #1:

As a consequence of the renumbered opening chapter in this issue, the next two chapters are also renumbered, hence Part 4 is titled Part 2:

Here's the original page as per the Page Publications printing in The Incredible Hulk #1:

This chapter has been subjected to other alterations. It is a 5-page chapter presented as a 4-page chapter in the Newton edition.

To illustrate the alterations, see the the third and fourth pages as per the Page Publications printing:

This is the third page in the Newton edition:

This page is a composite of the third and fourth pages of the original story. The third panel of the third page has been omitted, and the last four panels of the Newton edition have been culled - out of sequence and with some cropping - from the fourth page of the original story.

This is the title page of the third chapter in the Newton edition:

It is retitled from Part 5 of the original story:

The last page of this story has also been modified. The final panel includes an editorial note advertising other Newton Comics titles:

This is the original page as per the Page Publications printing:

It is worth noting that this story has been printed with gray tones in this issue. This did not occur in the preceding two chapters in the preceding issue.

Given the excruciating modifications of the first story it's a relief to note the other stories in this issue, The Beauty and the Beast! and The Hordes of General Fang! appear to be reprinted intact.

This is the full colour poster included in this issue:

This image originally appeared on the cover of Marvel Comics' The Mighty Thor #131. It was also a black and white single page pinup in other Newton issues and one of the Nabisco posters.

This issue was advertised in-house:

This advertisement is scanned from Newton's The Fantastic Four #5.

This issue contains the following in-house advertisements for other Newton comics:

Doctor Strange #1

Dracula #2

Based on the available information this issue appears to have been published 30 August 1975. The expiry date for the contest is 13 October 1975 - three weeks after the expiry date of the contest in The Incredible Hulk #4, which I have earmarked as published on 9 August 1975. This issue also shares a competition expiry date, inner advertisements and a letters page with The Amazing Spider-Man #7 which was published 30 August 1975. This is not conclusive evidence but given the pieces fit, so to speak, it's my best guess pending further information.

The Incredible Hulk #4: The Newton edition

This is the cover to Newton Comics' The Incredible Hulk #4:

This is modified from the original on Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk #4:

The story contents are as follows:

The Monster and The Machine!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #4, November 1962
The Gladiator from Outer Space!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #4, November 1962
The Terror of the Toad Men Part 1: Enter... The Toad Men, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #2, July 1962
[The Terror of the Toad Men] Part 2: Prisoners of the Toad Men!, originally published in The Incredible Hulk #2, July 1962

The Monster and The Machine! and The Gladiator from Outer Space! appear to be reprinted intact.

The Terror of the Toad Men Part 1 is reprinted complete, but not quite intact. Here's a photo of the two-page spread of the second and third pages of the story in the Newton edition:

Compare the same two-page spread in Page Publications' The Incredible Hulk #1:

As you can see, the Newton pages are printed out of sequence.

[The Terror of the Toad Men] Part 2 has been modified. This is the splash page as per Page Publications' The Incredible Hulk #1:

Compare the same page to the Newton edition:

As you can see elements have been inserted and rearranged on the page. The Hulk title has been inserted above the Part 2 chapter title, which now encroaches into the shadowed figure, and the art has been modified on the bottom of the page - the glove and gun of the Toad Man has been redrawn and the bottom portion of his shoulder has been erased. The job code and creator credits have also been omitted.

The Terror of the Toad Men! is a 5-part story. This issue reprints only the first two parts. The story continues in the next issue. The final panel in Part 2 is modified with the advisory Concluded Next Issue:

My copy of this issue does not include a poster. I have seen three copies of this issue, each with different posters. I suspect the poster native to this issue is either a Ghost Rider poster or a Silver Surfer poster. TBA.

This issue includes the following in-house advertisements:

The Fantastic Four #3

Conan the Barbarian #1

The expiry date for the contest is 22 September 1975.

I am uncertain about the publication date but based on the available information it appears to have been published 9 August 1975, the same day as The Avengers #3. As I don't have information on the poster in this issue I don't know if there is another in-house advertisement or other data which may help settle the publication date. TBA.
